Swell Surge waves warning to Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andamans on May 4 and 5

Fishermen and coastal population are alerted to be cautious on possible surging of waves intermittently in the nearshore and beach areas

HYDERABAD, MAY 03, 2024: The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad has alerted that the Swell Surge Wave warning to Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 4 and 5, 2024.

In a statement here on Friday, the INCOIS said that presently, there is possibility of swell surges and rough sea conditions associated with the effect of high period swell waves that are approaching from distant  Southern Indian Ocean. The event started at approximately 10,000 kilometers away from Indian coast on April 26, 2024 in the southern Atlantic Ocean and slowing moving towards southern Indian ocean.

This caused the high energy swell propagation towards Indian coastal regions which is expected to hit southern tip of India in the early hours around 2.30 am on May 4. These long period swells combined with high tide condition can cause coastal flooding in the low-lying areas  of Lakshadweep, Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha and West Bengal coasts during May 4 and 5.

Stating that the low-lying coastal areas are vulnerable, the INCOIS said that they were monitoring the situation and advised the people to check INCOIS website www.incois.gov.in.portal/osf/osf.jsp for updates. The fishermen and coastal population are alerted to be cautious on possible surging of waves intermittently in the nearshore and beach areas. They advised people to avoid visiting sea coast on May 4 and 5.
