DCA officials seize medicines with misleading claims

HYDERABAD, AUGUST 29, 2024:  Officials of the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana seized certain Ayurvedic, Unani and homeopathy medicines in the market with misleading claims on their labels, asserting that they treat dengue, fever, arthritis, kidney stones etc.

The DCA officials seized Kineaz Oil, which claim to treat Rheumatoid and Arthritis, Stone Crush Ras, claimed to treat ‘Kidney Stones, Gementis Stone Removal Syrup, which claimed to treat ‘Kidney Stones’, Dengue Aid, a Homeopathic medicine, claimed to treat ‘Fevers’ and Roughan Haft Barg, a Unani medicine, claimed to treat ‘Rheumatism’.

Director-General of DCA VB Kamalasan Reddy said that the officials during the raids in various parts of Hyderabad city on August and 29  seized the medicines for misleading claims on their labels in contravention of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. G Indira Priyadarshini, Drugs Inspector, Habsiguda, D. Swetha Bindu, Drugs Inspector, Gandipet,  J. Ashwin Kumar, Drugs Inspector, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, A. Rashmi, Drugs Inspector, Jogulamba-Gadwal, and Ch. Swapna, Drugs Inspector, Jubilee Hills are among the officers who carried out the raids.

In another raid, the officials of Warangal Zone have detected the product ‘Neurocad-G Tablets’ (Gabapentin and Methylcobalamin Tablets) circulating in the market. The product has been claimed to contain Gabapentin 300 mg and Methylcobalamin 500 mcg. These tablets were falsely manufactured under a ‘food license (FSSAI license)’ and falsely claimed to be a food product/nutraceutical.

The tablets were found to be illegally manufactured at Pristine Remedies, under the technical guidance of Universal Bio Swift, Barotiwala, Dist. Solan- 173209 as a food product/nutraceutical.  As per the label claim of the product, it is classified as a ‘drug’ according to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

The product ‘Neurocad-G Tablets’ must be manufactured only under a ‘drug license’ issued under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, adhering strictly to the ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ (GMP) outlined in Schedule-M of the Drugs Rules. Additionally, it must meet the quality standards prescribed in the ‘Indian Pharmacopoeia’ (IP) as mandated. A.N. Kranthi Kumar, Drugs Inspector, Vikarabad carried out the raid and seized the drugs at a medical shop in Tandur. Samples were lifted for analysis during the raids.

The drugs that are falsely manufactured and sold under a food license are not produced in accordance with ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ (GMPs) and often fail to meet the quality standards prescribed in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). Such products pose serious risks to patients’ health and may have severe implications.

The public may report any suspected manufacturing activity related to drugs, including narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, in residential, commercial, or industrial areas, as well as any other complaints regarding illegal activities concerning medicines, through the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana Toll-Free Number 1800-599-6969, which is operational from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm on all working days.
