DCA seize overpriced medicine, drugs with false claims and nabs a quack

HYDERABAD, MAY 29, 2024: Officials of Drugs Control Administration, Telangana have continued their drive against overpriced medicines, seizure of medicines for misleading advertisements and quacks in various parts of state on Tuesday and Wednesday.

DCA Director-General VB Kamalasan Reddy said that the officials seized overpriced antifungal medicine ‘Testra-200 Capsules’ (Itraconazole Capsules 200 mg) at Shameerpet, Medchal-Malkajgiri District – The MRP indicated is very high compared to the Ceiling Price fixed for the product by the Central Government. The firm overpriced the product and charging excess of Rs. 50.30/- for 10 capsules which is a violation of Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Sri. B. Praveen, Drugs Inspector, Shameerpet, Sri. E. Naresh Reddy, Drugs Inspector, and Smt. S. Umarani, Drugs Inspector are among the officers who carried out the raid. Further investigation shall be carried out and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.

In separate events, DCA officials seized certain medicines due to misleading advertisements: P-Mycetin Ointment, an allopathic medicine, claimed to treat ‘diseases of eye’ and Mahasudarshan Kadha, an Ayurvedic medicine, claimed to treat ‘Fever’.

Drugs Inspector, Kapra detected P-Mycetin Ointment (Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment IP 1% w/w), an allopathic medicine, Manufactured by: Eastern Healthcare, Plot No. 7, Sector 6A, IIE, SIIDCUL, Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The product label bears a misleading claim stating that it treats ‘diseases of Eye’. Stocks of the medicines were seized during the raid conducted at a medical shop in Kapra, Medchal-Malkajgiri District.

Drugs Inspector, Khammam Urban detected Mahasudarshan Kadha, an ayurvedic medicine, Manufactured by: Om Pharmaceutical Ltd, 12th Mile, Old Madras Road, Bengaluru. The product label bears a misleading claim stating that it treats ‘Fever’. Stocks of the medicines were seized during the raid conducted at a medical shop in Khammam.

In an another operation, the officials raided a quack’s clinic and seized drugs stocked for sale at Gachibowli, Serilingampally Mandal, Rangareddy District. On credible information, Drugs Control Administration officials, on 28th May, 2024 raided the premises of a quack K. Swarupa, at Plot at Gachibowli , Serilingampally Mandal, Rangareddy District, who was practicing medicine without proper qualification at her clinic ‘Swarupa First Aid Centre’.

 

During the raid, DCA officials detected medicines found stocked at the premises without any drug license. About 17 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, analgesics, etc. were found stocked at the premises. DCA officials seized the stock, worth a total of Rs. 8,000 during the raid.

DCA officials detected several ‘antibiotics’ at the clinic during the raid. Indiscriminate sale of antibiotics, by unqualified persons may have disastrous consequences on the health of public, including emergence of ‘Antimicrobial Resistance’.  A.
