DCA officials seize ‘aio oils’ which claim to treat cancer, heart ailments, diabetes and obesity in Hyderabad

The officials also raid a quack’s clinic Nalgonda district

HYDERABAD, MARCH 03, 2024: Officials of Telangana state Drugs Control Administration seized ‘aio organic Almond Oil,’ ‘aio organic Walnut Oil,’ and ‘aio organic Kalonji Oil,’ which are being claimed as edible oils, in Shalibanda, Hyderabad, for making misleading advertisements that they treat Cancer, Heart diseases, Diabetes and Obesity.

In a statement here on Sunday, DCA Director General VB Kamalasan Reddy said that the DCA officials detected products labeled as ‘aio organic Almond Oil,’ ‘aio organic Walnut Oil,’ and ‘aio organic Kalonji Oil,’ which are being claimed as edible oils and are circulating in the market with misleading claims on their labels that they treat ‘Cancer, Heart diseases, Diabetes and Obesity.’ Such claims contravene the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 prohibits advertisements for the treatment of certain diseases and disorders. No person shall take part in the publication of advertisements regarding the diseases/disorders indicated under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

On 2nd March, 2024, based on gathered intelligence, officials from the Drugs Control Administration of the Hyderabad Zone conducted a raid at Shakker Ganj, Shalibanda, Hyderabad. The raid targeted the manufacturing location of products labeled as ‘aio organic Almond Oil,’ ‘aio organic Walnut Oil,’ and ‘aio organic Kalonji Oil,’ which were found to bear misleading claims stating that they treat Cancer, Heart diseases, Diabetes, and Obesity. Stocks of a total worth of Rs. 21,000/- were seized during the raid. T Rajamouli, Assistant Director, Hyderabad and B Lakshmi, Drugs Inspector, Charminar are among the officers who carried out the raid.

Under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, it is expressly prohibited to disseminate misleading advertisements claiming treatment for ‘Cancer, Heart diseases, Diabetes, and Obesity.’ This legislation aims to safeguard public health by preventing the promotion of false or unproven remedies for serious medical conditions.

In another incident, the DCA officials on credible information along with Vigilance and Enforcement officials raided the premises of a quack Dasari Mallaiah, at  Irkigudem Village, Damercherla Mandal, Nalgonda District, on Saturday, who was claiming himself as a ‘Rural Medical Practitioner’ and practicing medicine without proper qualification at his clinic.

During the raid, DCA officials detected huge stocks of medicines found stocked at the premises without any drug license. 41 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, steroids, analgesics, cough syrups, anti-ulcer drugs, antidiabetics, antihypertensives, etc., were found stocked at the premises. DCA officials seized the stock, worth a total of Rs. 45,000/- during the raid.

K Dass, Assistant Director, Nalgonda, Sri. K. Someshwar, Drugs Inspector, Miryalguda, and Sk. Ghouse, Inspector of Police, Vigilance and Enforcement Department, Nalgonda Unit, are among the officers who carried out the raid.

DCA officers lifted the samples for analysis. Further investigation will be carried out, and action will be taken as per the law against all the offenders.
