National Space Day on August 23
HYDERABAD, AUGUST 13, 2024: The Geological Survey of India, State Units of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrated National Space Day on Tuesday (August 13, 2024) in Kakatiya Multipurpose Hall, Bandlaguda, Hyderabad.
The Government of India declared August 23 as ‘National Space Day’ to commemorate the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which accomplished a safe and soft landing of the Vikram Lander and deployment of the Pragyaan Rover on the lunar surface near the South Pole on August 23, 2023.
The event was inaugurated by Mr Suraj Domaji Patbhaje, Additional Director General and Head of Department, GSI, Southern Region. On this occasion, he emphasized the importance of celebrating ‘National Space Day’ to foster awareness and interest in scientific and research advancements among students and researchers in the field of space science. He also discussed the progressive steps taken by ISRO to maintain our nation’s esteemed position globally since the 1960s when India began launching satellites.
The Geological Survey of India also contributes by studying satellite data to identify surface rock types, structures, morphologies, and mineral resources through remote sensing technologies. During the event, students and faculty from Bhashyam Blooms School, Fatullaguda, Hyderabad, gathered to celebrate ‘National Space Day’ in a grand manner.
Dr. Lalan Prasad Singh, Deputy Director General, GSI, State Unit: Telangana, spoke about recent space technologies and the success of Indian moon missions in recent years, which he described as a proud moment for the country. He encouraged students to continue studying space science. Mr S. N. Mahapatro, Deputy Director General, GSI, State Unit: Andhra Pradesh, highlighted the significance of student participation in ‘National Space Day’ celebrations as a crucial step for future generations in space science and also informed them about modern activities undertaken by ISRO, which are comparable to those of other global organizations. Students also engaged in studying satellite imageries through stereoscopes and participated in a quiz competition related to space science. The winners and runners-up of the quiz competition were felicitated with prizes. Directors and geoscientists from the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh units and the Southern Region of GSI were also present and organized the event successfully.
