HYDERABAD, AUGUST 15, 2026: The Geological Survey of India (GSI), Southern Region, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm at its office premises in Bandlaguda, Hyderabad, on Saturday.
Shri. Vijay V. Mugal, Additional Director General & Head of Department, GSI, Southern Region, hoisted the National Flag and led the Independence Day celebrations. The gathering paid tribute to the freedom fighters and recalled their invaluable contribution to the Nation’s independence and progress.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Vijay V. Mugal, highlighted the significant role of GSI in strengthening India’s mineral resource base and mineral security through systematic geological mapping, exploration, scientific research and assessment of mineral resources.
He particularly emphasised the growing importance of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, rare earth elements, graphite, titanium, vanadium and other strategic minerals, which are essential for emerging technologies, renewable energy, electric mobility, advanced electronics, defence and the transition towards a low-carbon economy. Ensuring adequate domestic resources of these minerals is vital for reducing import dependence and strengthening India’s strategic and economic resilience.
He stressed that GSI’s systematic exploration programmes, including the identification, exploration and assessment of critical mineral resources, have an important role in supporting Viksit Bharat- Atmanirbhar Bharat and ensuring long-term mineral security for the nation. The Southern Region, Hyderabad, with its diverse and prospective geological terrains, has significant scope for exploration of critical and strategic mineral resources.
The programme was attended by the Ex. Director Generals of GSI, senior officers, scientists, technical personnel and staff of GSI Southern Region. The celebrations concluded with a renewed commitment to scientific excellence, responsible mineral exploration and contributing to the nation’s sustainable development and mineral security.
