Karimnagar sees an increase in cybercrimes and declines in property offences including robbery, murder, snatching, fatal accidents etc

KARIMNAGAR, DECEMBER 30, 2024: Even as the crime rate under various heads such as robbery and dacoit, murder, rioting, chain-snatching and fatal accidents had declined considerably, the Karimnagar Commissionerate of Police had recorded the highest number of economic offences during the year 2024.

Disclosing this to newsmen here on Monday, Commissioner of Police Abhishek Mohanty said that a total of 726 Economic offences were reported in the district in the year 2024 which includes, 46 per cent of cybercrime, 15 per cent of land-related cases, eight per cent of cases of cash and money related cases, seven per cent chit fund cases and five per cent job-fraud cases.

Incidentally, robbery and dacoity had declined by 38 per cent, rioting by 44 per cent, murder by 33 per cent, chain-snatching by 30 per cent decline and fatal accidents decreased by 9.36 per cent in the district.

The incidence of cybercrime has increased steadily in the district. In 2023, the police received 1654 cases through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and in 2024, they received 2282 cases. The police could put Rs 9.87 crore on hold in the year 2024 when compared to Rs 1.74 crore in the year 2023. They also ensured the release of Rs 2.57 crore to the victims of cybercrime through court orders.

The CP said that they had arrested 179 persons in 113 land-related cases for creating fake documents and cheating the people. The police also arrested nine chit-fund directors and 16 others related to chit-fund fraud cases. They had also arrested 27 persons for job fraud.

The Karimnagar Commissionerate of Police has arrested 1198 persons and seized 797 vehicles for illegally transporting sand in the district during the year 2024 when compared to 120 persons arrest and seizure of 244 vehicles in the year 2023. Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the police arrested 85 persons in 39 cases and seized 128 kgs of contraband in the year 2024 when compared to 22 cases and 55 arrests and seizure of 27 kgs of contraband in the year 2023.
