KARIMNAGAR, JULY 04, 2026: A second-year degree student was arrested by Karimnagar police after he kidnapped a woman, threw her in an open agricultural well and stole her jewellery to clear debts from an online gambling app.
Disclosing this to newsmen here on Saturday, Commissioner of Police Gaush Alam said that Damma Dinesh Reddy (21) of Gollapalli village was addicted to online gambling such as DIUWIN and Jio lottery, colour trading games and incurred losses to the tune of Rs 4 lakhs. Besides, he incurred debts from online apps and was facing threats from the apps demanding repayment of the loans.
To make fast money to clear the debts, the accused Dinesh Reddy had conducted a recce of various locations in Karimnagar town and zeroed in on the labour adda at Tower circle area. He had identified a lonely woman, Gangadhara Laxmi (55), who was waiting for employment at the labour adda on July 1, 2026. He booked a Rapido bike, abducted the woman, and took her to Thimmapur mandal and later to Nusthullapur village outskirts and snatched away her five grams of gold and 20 grams of silver ornaments.

Later, the accused threw her into an open well. When the victim tried to climb the well with the help of a rope, he cut the rope and dumped the woman into the well. However, the woman, who knows swimming, had caught hold of another rope at the motor-pump and waited till the dawn of the next day.
In the morning, she raised alarms, and the farmers rushed to the well and rescued her with the help of ropes and informed the police. The police shifted her to the hospital for medical treatment. Initially, the police registered a missing case, and later it was altered to abduction and extortion.
The police cracked the mystery with scientific evidence and nabbed the accused when he was moving suspiciously at the Telangana martyrs memorial in Karimnagar town. The accused confessed of the crime and the police recovered a mobile phone, a motorcycle, Rs 5,000 cash and 20 grams of silver anklets. He told the police he had sold the gold ornaments at a jewellery job and secured Rs 30,000.
