KARIMNAGAR, APRIL 18, 2025: World Heritage Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting our heritage monuments and traditions for future generations.
World Heritage Day is celebrated on April 18 every year and is a significant day to recognise and celebrate the rich cultural and natural heritage of our world.
To protect human heritage and to recognise the efforts of all relevant organisations in this field. The day was proclaimed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 and adopted by the UNESCO General Assembly in 1983.
Our Culture – Our Responsibility
The world has a wonderful heritage in the form of man-made sculptures, structures, artefacts, beliefs, traditions, geographical diversity, etc. This wealth has been preserved for us by generations before us. To recognise, preserve and promote such heritage.
Heritage means the human, cultural, historical and natural wealth of people. This includes man-made historical monuments, archaeological sites, temples, mosques, forts, dance-arts, languages, literary traditions, nature reserves, forest areas, mountains, rivers, etc.
These treasures reveal our past heritage. They reflect the culture, history, and lifestyle of the people.
Objectives of Heritage Day
-To create a sense of respect for heritage sites among the people
-To encourage restoration work
-To develop tourism
-To create employment opportunities for the locals
-Understanding of cultures
-Protecting our heritage for future generations
Heritage Sites in India:
India is rich in scholarship, arts, architecture, diverse culture and geographical diversity. So far, more than 40 sites in India have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Some of the most important ones are:
Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Taj Mahal, Hampi ,Western Ghats ,Kaziranga National Park etc;
Celebrating World Heritage Day is a day of responsibility. Even small things we do can make a big difference.
-World Heritage Day is not just about visiting historical sites on a day; it is about fostering respect for our culture and taking care to preserve it for future generations.
Our heritage is more valuable to us than money.
On this day, we should pledge – “It is our responsibility to protect our culture, history and nature.”
