World Consumer Rights Day Observed at GDC Sircilla

RAJANNA-SIRCILLA, MARCH 15, 2024: Department of Commerce and Economics of the Government Degree College Sircilla (Agraharam) organised World Consumer Rights Day and also conducted Essay Writing and Elocution competitions to the students on Friday.

Inaugurating the celebrations, Jhansi Shukla EC Member – Confederation of All Telangana Consumer Organizations (CATCO) and General Secretary -Sircilla Consumer Society, said that every person right from the moment of birth to death is a consumer and must know the Consumer Rights conferred by the Consumer Protection Act to prevent the unfair and fraudulent activities of the traders and businessmen. She said that World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year on 15th March since 1983 when Consumer International proposed observance.

Jhansi Shukla created extensive awareness on the eight Consumer Rights and Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions at District, State and National Level along with the expected compensation limit. To create extensive awareness on the Consumer Protection Act, 2029, she has distributed pamphlets among the students and urged them to create awareness among the rural people.

Speaking on the occasion In-charge Principal Tirukovela Srinivas reiterated that Consumer is king of the market who should not compromise on quality, basic information and quantity of products and services. He urged the students to create awareness in the rural areas about the Consumer Protection Act and consumer rights to protect themselves from the defective products.

Conveners of the programme Afsari Osmani and M. Malla Reddy said that the World Consumer Rights Day is observed as the former President of US John F. Kennedy introduced the Consumer Rights Bill in the US Senate on 15 March 1965. They said that this year’s theme is ‘Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers’.

Essay Writing and Elocution competitions were conducted and prizes were distributed to winners and runners along with consolation. In the Essay Writing Competition V. Sushma bagged First prize, M. Uday Kiran second prize and A. Vamshi third prize. In Elocution competitions – A. Vamshi secured first prize, M. Laharika second prize and G. Akshay won third prize.

In this programme, Academic Coordinator Madhu Rajesh, IQAC coordinator V. Venkateshwarlu, College faculty  K. Rajesh, M. Prabhakar, N.Srinivasulu, KY Karuna, AO Amjad Ali, Y. Narayana, Y. Narsaiah, Madhu Babu, Deepika, Arjun, Ramesh Babu, Fakeer Baba, Nirmala, Gopikrishna, Shanthiraj, Ramesh Sharma and a good number of students participated.
