NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 27, 2026: Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, today participated in the Vishwa Seva Dinam celebrations at Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Amritapuri, Kollam, Keralam, organised on the occasion of the 73rd birthday of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.
During the occasion, the Vice-President launched several humanitarian initiatives of the Math. He handed over ₹2 crore in assistance for Nepal flood relief to the Ambassador of Nepal to India, Shri Surender Thapa. He also distributed certificates for free surgeries for underprivileged beneficiaries at Amrita Hospitals in Kochi and Faridabad and financial assistance to families of fishermen.
The Vice-President also released the Amritakuteeram 30th Anniversary Souvenir, commemorating the completion of 50,000 homes across India and Sri Lanka, along with three new Ashram publications: The Hanuman Chalisa, The Ocean of Grace and Satyam Shivam Sundaram.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President described it as a “profound privilege and a matter of immense happiness” to be present at Amritapuri on the occasion of Amma’s 73rd birthday. He offered his respectful pranam to Mata Amritanandamayi Devi and wished her a long life dedicated to the service of the nation.
Recalling an earlier occasion when he had invited Amma to a programme in Coimbatore, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan said he still remembered the long stream of thousands of people who had gathered to greet her and seek her blessings.
Paying tribute to Amma’s lifelong service, the Vice-President said her life is a message of love, compassion and selfless service. He said her life reminds the nation of a timeless truth of Bharat, that Seva is a way of life and an expression of oneness with humanity.
He recalled that from childhood itself, Amma felt the suffering of people around her and responded with food, clothing, affection and compassion. At the heart of this service, he said, is the spiritual understanding that all beings share an essential divine oneness.
Highlighting healthcare as one of the most inspiring dimensions of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math’s humanitarian work, Shri C.P.Radhakrishnan said that, charitable medical care worth over ₹890 crore has been provided in Bharat since 1998, benefiting more than 64 lakh patients through free treatment and surgeries.
Recalling the inauguration of Amrita Hospital at Faridabad in August 2022, the Vice-President referred to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s description of Amma as an embodiment of “love, compassion, service and sacrifice” and as a carrier of India’s spiritual tradition.
The Vice-President said Seva is also about creating opportunities for the future.He noted that more than 55,000 scholarships have been provided worldwide by the Math and highlighted tablet-aided education, after-school tutoring, adult literacy and vocational training initiatives aimed at opening new pathways for disadvantaged communities.
He particularly highlighted the empowerment of women through AmritaSREE. He said around 2.5 lakh women from poor and vulnerable communities have been supported through start-up capital, vocational training and microfinance, with more than 15,000 Self-Help Groups.
“When a woman becomes economically empowered, the impact extends far beyond the individual,” he said, noting that it strengthens families and communities.
He said Nari Shakti is not simply about participation, but about empowerment, dignity, opportunity and leadership.
The Vice-President said what began with the compassion of a young girl in a village has grown into a humanitarian movement touching millions of lives in Bharat and across the world.
He highlighted the construction of more than 50,000 homes for the homeless, scholarships for thousands of children, pensions for more than one lakh impoverished people and livelihood initiatives.
While noting the impressive scale of the work, he said the real greatness lies in the human lives behind the numbers. Service, he added, must therefore be understood not merely through statistics but through the transformation it creates in human lives.
The Vice-President said the true test of Seva often comes during times of crisis and highlighted the Math’s humanitarian response to disasters and emergencies.
He referred to the organisation’s assistance during the Indian Ocean tsunami, Gujarat earthquake, Uttarakhand floods, Keralam floods, COVID-19 pandemic and Wayanad landslides.
He also highlighted the Math’s contribution of ₹100 crore to the Government of India’s Namami Gange programme, along with tree plantation, cleanliness drives and initiatives for sustainable rural living.
Referring to the Amala Bharatam initiative, he said it has undertaken large numbers of cleanliness drives across the country, while more than 10 lakh trees have been planted worldwide as part of the UN Billion Tree Campaign.
The Vice-President said the spirit inspiring Amma’s work is deeply connected to the civilisational ethos of Bharat.He said Seva has no boundaries of caste, creed, language, region or nationality and recognises only one identity-humanity. He described this as the underlying philosophy of Vishwa Seva Dinam.
Referring to the multiple challenges facing the world, including conflicts, humanitarian crises, natural disasters, displacement, poverty, loneliness and environmental challenges, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan said humanity needs more than technological advancement. “It needs compassionate advancement,” he said.
The Vice-President said Bharat is progressing towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat, and development requires infrastructure, technology, investment, innovation and economic growth.However, he stressed that development must also have a human face.
“While marching towards attaining a Viksit Bharat, we must ensure that modernity and our civilisational values move together,” he said, adding that “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” should be the guiding mantra.He also called for ensuring that Viksit Bharat is an inclusive Bharat where no one is left behind.
Concluding his address, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan offered his respectful pranam to Mata Amritanandamayi Devi and said that Amma is a miracle and should continue to guide us in serving society and the nation.He expressed the hope that the noble movement would continue to touch millions of lives and that Seva would become the foundation of a more peaceful, sustainable and compassionate world.
