KARIMNAGAR, AUGUST 07, 2024: The Play School, an exclusive kindergarten school, opposite SRR Government Degree and PG College in Karimnagar celebrated National Handlooms Day on Wednesday. School chairman Dr Polsani Sudhakar Rao conveyed his wishes and appreciated the teachers for conducting the programme to educate the students about the importance of handlooms.

The teaching faculty had arrived in their best handloom sarees to promote the handlooms and encourage the weaving community, the largest contributor to individual income only after the agricultural sector. The teachers made PowerPoint presentations about the importance of handlooms even before Independence and Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi’s crusade to promote handlooms and khadi products.

Stating that the weaving was an artistic form, the teachers explained to the students about different handloom products made by the weavers such as Pochampalli sarees, Kanjeevaram in Tamil Nadu, Mysore silk of Karnataka, Ikats of Odisha, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh and many more.

The teachers explained that purchasing and wearing handloom products would encourage the weaving community, who strive hard to weave a saree, towel, bedsheet, shawls, carpets and more. Stressing on the importance of protection of the ancient artisan and traditional arts, the teachers enlightened the students about India’s handloom industry playing crucial role for the socio-economic development and preservation of its rich cultural legacy.

Principal Prabha Devi, who supervised the programme, stressed the vital importance of raising awareness about the handloom community’s significance. She empowered the students towards safeguarding the handloom legacy and handloom weavers and employees more opportunities.
