MUMBAI, APRIL 30, 2025: The Mumbai sky wears its usual grey, humid veil, but outside the Jio World Convention Centre (JWCC), something extraordinary brews. The sprawling façade of the JWCC shimmers under spotlights and massive LED displays pulsing with the WAVES Summit logo. Security details move with intent, cranes hoist final fixtures, and camera crews scurry across pavements, their lenses trained on every movement.

There is a low but constant hum of walkie-talkies, clinking scaffolds, and rehearsals filtering through the air. On the eve of the first ever WAVES Summit, the JWCC has transformed into a coliseum of creativity, a nucleus of anticipation brimming with power, passion, and promise. Across the city too, the signs are unmistakable. Banners flutter, hotels are booked to capacity, and the cultural pulse of Mumbai beats louder in readiness for what promises to be a landmark carnival of creativity and innovation.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi steps up to inaugurate the WAVES Summit on Thursday (May 1), it will signal more than just the opening of an event. It will reflect India’s bold move to lead the global conversation where storytelling, technology, and culture meet. Organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the four-day summit, running from 1 to 4 May in Mumbai, aims to position India as a creative and technological force across industries, from cinema and television to AI, immersive reality, gaming, and digital media. For creators, innovators, and investors alike, it offers a powerful platform to shape the future of entertainment.
At the heart of this extraordinary summit is the Bharat Pavilion, spread across 1,470 square meters, showcasing India’s dynamic legacy under the theme “Kala to Code.” To be inaugurated tomorrow, the Pavilion will take visitors on an immersive journey through the evolution of Indian storytelling, from ancient oral traditions and visual arts to cutting edge technological advancements, across four experiential zones: Shruti, Kriti, Drishti, and Creator’s Leap. In addition to the Bharat Pavilion, WAVES 2025 will feature exclusive State Pavilions, where Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and several other states will proudly showcase their cultural and creative strengths.
As the Pavilion opens its doors to this rich journey through time and technology, the inaugural day sets the tone with an experience just as immersive, blending music, culture, and innovation on stage. The performances begin with an orchestral crescendo under the baton of M. M. Keeravaani, followed by legendary voices such as Shreya Ghoshal, Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Mangli, and K. S. Chithra. Together, they will unveil the WAVES Anthem, a sonic emblem of unity and creative strength. Sharad Kelkar will guide the audience through a visual journey connecting ancient narratives to contemporary innovations, supported by mixed-media storytelling and dynamic dance forms.
he cultural diversity of India finds its way to centre stage through performances by the Tetseo Sisters from Nagaland, followed by A. R. Rahman introducing JHALAA, his experimental band that blends Indian classical music with new-age sound design. The summit will also debut the Waves of India album, a unique collaboration between musical icons Keeravaani, Rahman, and Mahadevan, each bringing a distinct musical tradition to the collective.
The evening continues with cross-cultural collaborations, as the Dharavi Dream Project teams up with South Korea’s Beatpella House, followed by Indian pop sensation King and EDM star Alan Walker. The finale features cinematic legend Anupam Kher and choreographer Kruti Mahesh, capturing the essence of Indian cinema. These performances aim to unite creators, cultures, and countries through music and movement.
What sets the WAVES Summit apart is its refusal to remain within the boundaries of traditional entertainment. As much as it highlights creative excellence, it also addresses the powerful changes shaping the industry. Plenary sessions featuring icons like Hema Malini, Mithun Chakraborty, Rajnikanth, Akshay Kumar, SS Rajamouli, AR Rahman, Anil Kapoor, and Karan Johar promise more than glamour. These sessions will offer rich insight into the evolution of Indian storytelling and the new expectations of global audiences. Rajamouli, riding the wave of international acclaim following RRR, is particularly anticipated for his reflections on filmmaking beyond borders.
Meanwhile, breakout sessions will take a deep dive into the industry’s next frontier. Topics include regulatory frameworks for digital broadcasting, the role of artificial intelligence in creative production, and investment opportunities in the gaming sector. An open house hosted by professionals from NVIDIA will explore how AI is reshaping animation, visual effects, and immersive storytelling.
Another key event, titled The New Arcade, will bring together venture capitalists and emerging gaming entrepreneurs to discuss the future of gaming in India. With mobile and console gaming gaining momentum among Indian audiences, these conversations could steer the direction of the country’s gaming landscape in the years to come.
The summit’s masterclasses on day 1 are equally forward-looking. One session will explore how generative AI is helping creators visualise and produce compelling stories. Another will focus on how brands can use culture not just for marketing but as a foundation to build identity and trust in a rapidly evolving market.
As twilight settles over Mumbai tonight, the JWCC stands still but charged. Final rehearsals continue behind drawn curtains, light engineers fine-tune the mood, and organisers ensure every detail is in place. The air outside buzzes not only with traffic and chatter but also with the weight of something historic.
The WAVES Summit begins not as an isolated event but as a movement. When Prime Minister Modi declares it open, it will echo far beyond the confines of the convention centre. The summit aims to place India at the heart of the global media conversation. The buzz tonight is real. The WAVES are coming tomorrow.
