KARIMNAGAR, SEPTEMBER 17, 2026: The 79th Telangana Liberation Day was celebrated at the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree College for Women, Nagunur, in Karimnagar town, on Thursday, marking the liberation of Hyderabad state from the clutches of Nizam’s rule on September 17, 1948.
As part of the government’s call to celebrate the day as ‘Praja Palana Dinotsavam’, College Principal T Malathi hoisted the national flag and paid tributes to the portrait of Telangana Thalli and the Telangana Martyrs Memorial.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal recollected the ‘Operation Polo’ launched by the first Union Home Minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel following the instructions of the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to liberate Hyderabad state from the clutches of Nizam rulers.
Political Science faculty member P Shankaraiah enlightened the students about the history of the Telangana Liberation Day and the struggle launched for its liberation and merger with the Indian Union. He explained the importance of remembering the struggles of the people and the role played by various sections of society in the liberation movement. He also emphasised the importance of understanding history, preserving democratic values, and developing a sense of responsibility towards society and the nation.
Faculty members and students actively participated in the programme and paid their respects to the freedom fighters and all those who contributed to the liberation of Hyderabad State and its merger with the Indian Union.
