JAGTIAL, SEPTEMBER 27, 2024: The Health Club and Zoology Department of Government Degree College for Women, Jagtial town, in association with Mankind Pharma, conducted an awareness programme for the girl students on Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) on Friday.
Eminent Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of Jagtial town Dr Veneela delivered a talk on PCOS. She said excessive hormones in the blood are indicative of PCOS. The syndrome may lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer in women. She said 30% of issueless mothers suffer from PCOS. While its cause is not known, it is believed to be a hereditary and lifestyle disease. PCOS was a lifestyle disorder in women of childbearing age, which was fast becoming a common ailment among young girls and gnawing on their well-being.
Earlier, PCOS was found in women above 30 years of age but now it was common in teenagers. Out of every 10 patients of PCOS, six were teenagers, she stated[i]. This hormonal imbalance was caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, diet and lack of exercise, she said.
“Now, she every day meets at least a teenager complaining about irregular periods, excessive hair growth on the body, face, breast, lower part of abdomen and upper parts of limbs, acne, male pattern baldness, decreased menses or excessive flow,” Dr Veneela said.
She stated “Obesity is one of the main reasons why PCOS is on the rise.
