90% of Coal Supply to Meet Telangana’s Power Requirements
Requests Pour In from Across the Country for Singareni Coal… Yet Telangana’s needs remain the Top Priority
40.51 Lakh Tonnes Supplied to the Power Sector in August — 36.26 Lakh Tonnes to Telangana Alone
HYDERABAD, SEPTEMBER 08, 2026: At a time when electricity consumption is increasing across the country, and coal requirements of thermal power stations are rising, Singareni is standing firmly by its home state, Telangana.
Against the backdrop of increased power demand due to El Niño conditions, several power utilities across the country are looking towards Singareni and requesting coal supplies. Despite such strong demand for Singareni coal, the company continues to accord first priority to Telangana’s power requirements.
In accordance with the directions of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the State, Singareni has been continuously supplying coal to thermal power stations in Telangana. By supporting the power sector at crucial times, the company is also contributing significantly to the State’s industrial and economic growth.
Although supplying coal to other states offers commercial opportunities, Singareni is following the policy of “the interests of the home state take precedence over the company’s commercial interests.” Accordingly, the lion’s share of its coal production is being allocated to Telangana’s requirements, thereby strengthening the State’s power sector.
Nine Tonnes Out of Every Ten Tonnes Go to Telangana!
Singareni supplies the coal it produces to public-sector power utilities with which it has long-term Fuel Supply Agreements (FSAs). As part of these arrangements, the company has been supplying coal for several decades to various power utilities in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, thereby helping meet their energy requirements.
However, due to the prevailing El Niño conditions in the country, electricity demand has increased significantly even during the monsoon season. Under these circumstances and in accordance with the State Government’s directions, Singareni is according the highest priority to Telangana’s electricity requirements. Significantly, nearly nine out of every ten tonnes of coal supplied by Singareni to the power sector are reaching thermal power stations located in Telangana.
During August, Singareni supplied 40,51,312 tonnes of coal to power utilities across the country. Of this, as much as 36,25,937 tonnes was transported to power utilities located in Telangana. This means that nearly 90% of the coal supplied to power utilities went to generating stations located in Telangana.
On average, Singareni supplied 1,30,687 tonnes of coal per day to thermal power stations, of which 1,16,966 tonnes per day was supplied to thermal power stations in Telangana, thereby meeting the State’s energy requirements.
TGGENCO Receives the Highest Share — 50% of Coal Supply
During the previous month, 6,99,661 tonnes of coal was supplied to the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station through 179 railway rakes. This translates into an average supply of 22,570 tonnes per day, transported through an average of about six rakes per day.
Similarly, 7,99,017 tonnes of coal was supplied to the Yadadri Thermal Power Station through 203 railway rakes. This works out to an average supply of 25,775 tonnes per day, transported through an average of about seven rakes per day.
Singareni also transported 1,02,959 tonnes of coal to the Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant at Bhupalpally.
The Bhadradri Thermal Power Plant received 4,14,719 tonnes of coal, at an average of 13,378 tonnes per day.
Overall, Singareni transported 20,16,356 tonnes of coal to Telangana GENCO (TGGENCO) during the previous month through 382 railway rakes. Significantly, this constituted 50% of the total coal supplied to power stations in the State.
In addition, Singareni supplied 7,28,164 tonnes of coal to the Ramagundam NTPC plants, which contribute to Telangana’s energy requirements, and another 4,15,839 tonnes to the NTPC Telangana plant.
The Singareni Thermal Power Plant at Jaipur was supplied with 4,65,579 tonnes of coal.
Other States Seek Singareni Coal
With electricity consumption rising across the country, uninterrupted coal supply to coal-based thermal power stations has become increasingly critical. Under these circumstances, demand for Singareni coal from other states is also increasing.
Several power utilities have approached Singareni seeking coal supplies. These include:
- Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), West Bengal — 1 million tonnes
- NTECL, Durgapur — 1.2 million tonnes
- NSPCL–Jhajjar (Aravali) — 1 million tonnes
- NTECL, Tamil Nadu — 2 million tonnes
Other power utilities have also requested Singareni to supply coal to their generating stations.
Despite such intense demand, which presents significant commercial opportunities for Singareni, the company is keeping the State’s electricity requirements foremost in mind. Accordingly, it is prioritising coal supplies to thermal power stations in Telangana over additional demand from other states.
Naini Coal in Odisha Also Being Utilised for Telangana’s Requirements
Coal from Singareni’s Naini coal mine in Odisha, where production has commenced, is also being transported to the home state.
Singareni has already supplied one railway rake each from Naini to the Singareni Thermal Power Plant and the Yadadri Thermal Power Station.
Despite transportation-related constraints in Odisha, the company is prepared to supply more coal in the coming days. At present, around 15 lakh tonnes of coal at Naini is ready for extraction. However, transportation of coal from the mine to the railway siding is permitted only during night hours, making it difficult to increase coal dispatches substantially.
Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that coal being produced at Naini is also being utilised in the interests of Telangana.
Special Officers Appointed to Ensure Uninterrupted Coal Transportation
Keeping Telangana’s electricity requirements in view, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Shri Bhatti Vikramarka has been holding high-level coordination meetings with Singareni and other energy organisations over the past few months and has issued necessary directions to ensure adequate coal supplies.
Against this backdrop, the Singareni management has been steadily increasing coal production and transportation across all its areas.
To ensure that quality coal reaches thermal power stations on time, Singareni Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddha Prakash Jyothi has appointed five Special Officers to oversee coal production and transportation.
As a result, adequate coal production is being achieved and coal is being dispatched on time to thermal power stations through Coal Handling Plants (CHPs). The company is also coordinating the availability of sufficient railway rakes to facilitate timely transportation.
With electricity demand in Telangana increasing compared to previous levels due to the impact of El Niño, Singareni has reduced supplies to other states in order to safeguard the interests and power requirements of Telangana.
