

HANAMKONDA, MARCH 22, 2025: Sriperumbadur Laxmana Murthy (86), retired professor of the Department of English at Kakatiya University (KU), Warangal, passed away on Saturday while undergoing treatment for a kidney-related ailment at a hospital in Hyderabad.

A first-generation professor of the university’s Department of English, he was associated with KU for four decades, both as a student and faculty member since its inception. He played a significant role in training thousands of teachers of English, many of whom are now serving as lecturers across colleges in northern Telangana.
Hailing from Chandupatla village near Suryapet, Laxmana Murthy initially worked as a Sanskrit teacher at Nizam’s College in Hyderabad during the 1960s. He later did a Master’s degree in English Literature before joining Kakatiya University as a faculty member. A scholar proficient in Telugu, English, and Sanskrit, he authored several books and guided numerous research scholars in English studies. Even after his retirement in 1999, he remained active in academic and literary circles, regularly delivering speeches on Vedic and Upanishadic studies on radio and television. His father, Raghavacharya, was also a Sanskrit scholar, which influenced his deep knowledge of the language. Laxmana Murthy resided in Hanamkonda post-retirement, while his wife, Jayashree, worked as a lecturer at a local degree college. He is survived by wife, two daughters, and a son.
His final rites, before Mahaprasthanam (final voyage), will be conducted at 4G06, Vasavi Brindavanam, Moti Nagar, between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on March 23. The cremation will take place at Punjagutta Mahaprasthanam at 11 a.m. Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Prathap Reddy, Registrar Prof V Ramachandram, former Vice Chancellors Prof V Gopal Reddy, Prof Linga Murthy, Prof G Damodar and retired teachers of the Department of English Prof M Rajagopala Chary, Prof Indrasena Reddy, Prof Srinivas Vooradi, along with Head, Department of English Dr B Deepa Jyothi, Chairperson Poola Nirmala, Director of Centre for English Language Training Dr R Meghana Rao and several teaching and non-teaching staff of the university and prominent figures from the city, expressed their condolences on his demise.
