KARIMNAGAR, AUGUST 04, 2024: The National Bone and Joint Day was observed at Renee Hospital in Karimnagar on Sunday. A free bone and joint check-up camp was held and awareness talk was given at the hospital.
Renee Hospital chairman and senior Orthopaedician Dr Bangari Swamy said that the Indian Orthopedic Association has been celebrating the Bone and Joint Day on August 4 since 2012 and accordingly conducted free camp by providing free consultation and X-ray to around 110 patients.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Swamy said that osteoporosis (weak bones) is a silent killer which can lead to fragility of bones resulting in fractures. Hence, awareness is needed for the general public about the need to take adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D in their diet, encourage outdoor games for young, check vitamin D levels maintain good bone density and keep away from smoking and alcohol.
“One should eat a balanced diet, maintain ideal body weight, walk at least 30 minutes every day, and avoid misuse and overuse of joints. In the elderly, certain precautions to be taken to avoid fractures, one should use walking aids, railings in beds and toilets and have non-slippery floors in bathrooms. If the bones and joints of the elderly are in good shape, they can play with their grandchildren and lead a happy productive life in sunset years,” he added further.
He stated that these awareness programmes on bones and joints would go a long way in saving lives and building a healthy and productive society. Renee hospital Orthopedics department Dr Navya, Dr Veda Vihar, camp coordinator Mohammed Mohsin, hospital general manager Aravind Rao and others were also present.
