Pravasi Mitra Labour Union Observes International Migrants Day

NIRMAL, DECEMBER 18, 2024: The Pravasi Mitra Labour Union (PMLU) observed International Migrants Day 2024 at Nirmal Press Club on Wednesday.

It may be recalled that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day on December 4, 2000, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants worldwide.

Speaking on the occasion, PMLU state leader Swadesh Parikipandla said that India’s diaspora population is the largest in the world with over 90 lakh people from India living in the Gulf nations including 15 lakhs from Telangana state alone. He said that the migrants were helping in the progress of the motherland by bringing foreign exchange.

He said that the rise in the number of international migrants reflects the increasing importance of international migration, which has become an integral part of our economies and societies. Well-managed migration brings important benefits to countries of origin and destination, as well as to migrants and their families, he stated.

CPI leader SN Reddy said that the Telangana people have migrated to Gulf nations in large numbers and freshly it had increased to the Israel, Japan, Germany, Poland, Italy and other nations. Expressing concern over sudden and accident deaths of migrants in Gulf nations, he stressed on the effective implementation of Immigration Act, 1983 and ensure that the Pravasi Bharathiya Bheema Yojana (PBBY) was applicable to all migrants.

PMLU leader Kommu Geetha, Union leader Mohan, Lavanya, Lakshmi and others explained the Telangana state government’s initiatives and welfare scheme for the Gulf migrants including rehabilitation of the migrants under ‘Ghar Vapasi’ programme. They reminded that the Telangana government had announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to the bereaved family members of Gulf immigrants for the accident deaths. They also hailed the survey for the identification of Gulf immigrants and allocation seats to the children in the residential schools and colleges.
