Ministry of Finance appeals to the bank employees to call off their three-day strike from September 28 to 30, as it could disrupt banking services during the half-yearly closing of banks
KARIMNAGAR, SEPTEMBER 22, 2026: Employees of Telangana Cooperative Central Bank Employees Association (TCCBEA) Karimnagar chapter have observed Black Badge Wearing Day in solidarity of their demands for a five-day banking week on Tuesday (September 22, 2026)
As per the UFBU Agitational Programme, the TCCBEA leaders, led by its state Secretary Praveen, District Secretary T Raju and others, stated that “we observed Black Badge Wearing Day in solidarity with our demands. By wearing the black badge across all branches and various platforms in the integrated Karimnagar district, we have demonstrated our collective unity and solidarity for the cause”. Our main demand is 5-Day Banking, they reiterated.
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and other unions and associations have called a three-day strike from September 28 to 30, followed by an indefinite strike from October 26, over the demand for a five-day workweek. They had earlier observed a one-day strike on September 11, 2026.
On the other hand, the Union government is holding parleys with the bank union leaders, urging public sector bank employees to call off their proposed three-day strike from September 28 to 30 over the demand for a five-day workweek, saying the action could disrupt banking services during the half-yearly closing of banks.
“The proposed 3-day strike period, from 28th to 30th Sept 2026, also coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on 30th September, a date of particular significance for reconciliation, provisioning, and treasury and market operations. A disruption of this nature, combined with the preceding weekend, would result in an effective five-day closure of banking services at a particularly sensitive point in the financial calendar — causing considerable inconvenience to customers, businesses, Government transactions, and international banking operations,” the finance ministry said in its statement.
