Robotic surgery is a new concept in India among surgeons

Doctor reveal it has advantages over laparoscopy in many ways

Many complicated procedures are done with precision due to robotic surgery

KARIMNAGAR, AUGUST 24, 2024: Dr Kona S Lakshmi Kumari, Chief Academics, surgical gastroenterology, minimal access GI surgeon Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, has said that the robotic surgery is a new concept and has several advantages over laparoscopy as the patient can be discharged from hospital and in less amount of time and the complicated procedures are done with precision with 3D vision of the surgical area.

Talking to newsmen here at Yashoda health centre on Saturday, Dr Lakshmi Kumari said that a patient from Husnabad Umadevi Dhanu (68) had visited the hospital following the local doctors referring the case about inguinal hernia problem to Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad. A highly complicated procedure was done with ease as the doctor sat behind a console, having a 3D vision of the surgical area, while robotic arms precisely performed the surgery. The woman patient was discharged from the hospital within two days and she was able to do all works without any stress and she feels as if there was no surgery was performed on due to minimal invasion, Dr Lakshmi said.

She said that the Robotic surgery is a new concept that helps surgeons to successfully go ahead with a complicated case with ease. The complication rates are low and the patient can be out of the hospital faster and less amount of time, she stated. Through, the Robotic surgery, the patient may not require additional blood as there was less damages to the vessels and there would be no leakages of blood, she added.

In the state-of-the-art Robotic surgery, the “visualisation of structures” becomes vivid as a camera is mounted at a 360-degree rotation. “You can reach the nooks and corners of the surgical area. You can pick the problem areas without any disturbance, she said.

Besides scoring above the cut-open type of procedure, robotic surgery gives surgeons the freedom of “intuitive movement.”

“It gives magnification unlike laparoscopy with intuitive movements. This means that if my hand is moving towards the right, in laparoscopy, the instrument will move to the left. So one has to develop a certain kind of skill to do a laparoscopy. With robotic surgery, if you want to move your hand to the right side, then the instrument will also move to the right. This is called an intuitive movement,” says Dr Lakshmi Kumari.

Patient’s husband Anjaneyulu said that his wife Umadevi is perfectly alright after the Robotic surgery for the hernia repair. She has become more active than ever and doing all household chores on her own and eating all foods. He says that Robotic surgery is the best it reduces stay in the hospital and post-operative recovery time is very less and there was no need for any assistance from others as the patient can do their work on their own.
