GUNTUR, JULY 28, 2024: Guntur Medical College Professor and HoD and Chief Plastic, Cosmetic & Microvascular Surgeon Dr Sumita Shankar was honored with the prestigious Pioneer Researcher Award in the Black Buck Award in New Delhi. The award recognizes her groundbreaking research on innovative methods for managing lymphedema in filariasis cases.
The ceremony, organized by Medical Dialogues, was graced by the presence of Mr Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport, and Mr Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Minister of State in the Ministry of Jal Shakti, on Sunday.
A distinguished surgeon and academic leader and as a former Director of Research, Dr. Shankar has overseen significant academic and research initiatives, including 500 Undergraduate Student Research Scholarships (UGSRS) and 25 Faculty Research Grants. She advocates for state government support to enhance research funding, leveraging the recent increase in the health sector budget.
Dr. Shankar also calls for incentives, such as accelerated promotions for faculty members with PhD degrees, to encourage clinicians to pursue advanced research, taking advantage of the wealth of clinical material available in government hospitals.
Dr Sumita Shankar, Surgical Leader Graduate, Harvard Medical School , USA, Carl-Zeiss Fellow (Hand & Microsurgery), Cranio-Facial Fellow (Taiwan) and Cosmetic Surgery Fellow (USA & Barcelona) with a good academic and research, there is demand from the medical fraternity requesting the government for giving her additional charge as Direxctor (R&D) of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences to tap resources as the government had allocated Rs 4,000 crore in the budget for the medical research.
