Everyone who crosses 30 years of age should undergo annual heart checkups for early detection and prevention of cardiac problems
KARIMNAGAR, AUGUST 22, 2O26: Yashoda hospital, Hi-tec city, in Hyderabad, saved the life of a 23-year-old woman suffering from severe heart failure (Peripartum Cardiomyopathy) during childbirth (delivery) through the most advanced technology of ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) under the care of Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr Damodar Reddy Gouni.
Talking to newsmen at Yashoda Medical Centre in Karimnagar town on Saturday, Â Dr Damodar Reddy the 23-year-old patient, from Mahabubnagar district, developed a serious heart attack during her second delivery. Her blood pressure was low, and after receiving a call, they shifted the patient from the district to Yashoda Hi-Tech City.
When the patient arrived at Yashoda Hospital, her BP was 60/40, no urine output as the kidneys were affected, and she was not receiving adequate oxygen to the lungs and brain. They immediately started ECMO, a form of extracorporeal life support, providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of oxygen, gas exchange or blood supply to sustain life.
Under the supervision of Dr Damodar Reddy, the ECMO team of doctors including cardiologist, critical care, vascular surgery, obstretics and gyneocology and neurology enabled successful ECMO treatment. The doctors slowly improved the functioning of heart and lung of the patient.
After seven days, the patient was shifted to the room, and she recovered completely. The doctors could save the patient and helped the infant. The ECMO is an invaluable device to treat life-threatening cardiac conditions, he stated.
Stating that women with diabetes, fits, and low BP should undergo ECG and 2D echo tests during pregnancy, he advised that everyone who crosses the age of 30 years should undergo annual heart check-ups regularly for early detection and treatment.
