HYDERABAD, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026: Dr. S. Venkata Mohan, Chief Scientist, CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad, and presently Director, CSIR–National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), Nagpur, has been elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
The Fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy is among the country’s premier recognitions for distinguished contributions to science and research. Dr. Venkata Mohan’s election to the Academy is a significant acknowledgement of his sustained scientific contributions, particularly in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology and Sustainability Engineering.
Research that turns environmental challenges into opportunity
Dr. Mohan’s research has focused on developing innovative, science-driven and sustainable approaches to address complex environmental challenges. His multidisciplinary programme spans environmental biotechnology, resource recovery, wastewater treatment, bioelectrochemical systems, circular biorefineries and decarbonization.
A distinctive feature of his work is its strong translational and application-oriented focus. Scientific concepts and technologies have progressed from laboratory-scale research to field-level applications, supporting sustainable technologies for environmental remediation, resource recovery, reduction of carbon emissions and advancement of the circular bioeconomy.
Through this body of work, Dr. Mohan has helped frame environmental challenges as opportunities for resource recovery and value creation, integrating engineering, biotechnology and sustainability to enable more resource-efficient, low-carbon and circular systems.

With the INSA Fellowship (FNA), Dr. Mohan now holds fellowships of India’s three leading science and engineering academies, alongside the Vigyan Shri, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and the INAE–SERB Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship.
