Chilkuri Sushil Rao ‘Badge of Honour’ to 26 journalism students of OU

Lifetime Achievement Award to Dasu Krishnamoorty, the first student of the first batch of Journalism in Osmania University

HYDERABAD, DECEMBER 31, 2024:  The Journalism alumni of the 1989-91 batch (BCJ and MCJ)  Arts College, OU, presented the prestigious “Chilkuri Sushil Rao Badge of Honour” awards to students from the M.A. Journalism 1st and 3rd semesters for their exceptional skills in electronic media programme production across various categories on December 30, 2024.

Dr. T Satish Kumar, Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arts College, Osmania University expressed his appreciation for the thoughtful gesture of the alumni, emphasizing that these awards serve as a source of recognition and encouragement. He highlighted how such initiatives inspire students to actively participate in regular classes and practical sessions, adding significant value to their careers.

The medals and certificates were presented by the alumni including  Ch. Sushil Rao (Editor-Special Reports, The Times of India), Dr. Sangishetty Srinivas (Noted Writer), Dharmapuri Suresh (Head, News Wing, All India Radio), and A. Ravi (Managing Director, SkyMedia). They recalled how when they studied in the university 35 years ago, they took personal interest in everyone’s studies and also guided them professionally. They paid homage to Prof S Bashiruddin and Prof Abdur Raheem. The alumni expressed gratitude to their teachers including K Nageshwar, Padmaja Shaw, Kavita Karan, Ajay Kumar, Usha Vyasulu Reddy, Nargis Abraham and Shyam Sundar.

The gathering paid homage to an alumnus of the 1989-91 batch Uday Chander who passed away recently.

Alumni invitees Prof Kadiyala Sudhir Kumar, retired Journalism Professor, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University who also served as Head of Journalism Department and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, at Telugu University, and Dr Kankata Raja Ram, Associate Professor, Department of Communication, The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) spoke about skills students should develop and principles they have to hold on to in the field of journalism.

The alumni said as their social initiative to connect with their alma mater, the awards were presented to the students who displayed initiative and demonstrated excellence in their studies and practical words.

Alumni batch commended the efforts of Dr. K. Ramaswamy, a subject faculty member, for initiating weekly news bulletins and podcasts which provided students with hands-on experience and practical exposure to media production.

Participants said the programme not only celebrated students’ achievements but also underscored the need for an enduring bond between the alumni and the department, fostering a spirit of mentorship and support for budding journalists.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on Dasu Krishnamoorty, the first student of the first batch of journalism in Osmania University. The 99-year-old Dasu Krishnamoorty who is also an author lives in New Jersey, USA. Dasu Krishnamoory worked in several Indian newspapers, taught at various universities including Osmania University, Hyderabad Central University and Indian Institute of Mass Communication before moving to the US.

The awards were first given away by the 1989-91 (BCJ/MCJ) alumni batch in 2018 and have regularly been given to students and also veteran journalists.

A message to the present batch of students from Dasu Krishnamoorty from the 1954 batch (first student of first batch) was screened at the programme. The gold medalist from the 1989-90 BCJ batch Alka Chamrolia sent a message from the US congratulating the students who won the awards and the time she was a journalism student at the Arts college, OU, 35 years ago.

The students were appreciative of the efforts of the Alumni batch of 1989-91 in giving them the awards and that this would go a long way in encouraging them.
