JAGTIAL, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026: Coordinator and Principal Scientist of Telangana Rythu Vignana Kendra Dr A Vijaya Bhaskar conducted field visits to farms cultivating paddy, cotton, turmeric, red gram and maize in Rajarampalli, Nookapalli, Potharam, Malyala and Kodiamial of Jagtial district on Thursday.
During these visits, the agricultural scientist educated farmers on the appropriate crop management practices for each of these crops. It was explained that creating pathways within paddy fields helps in pest control. To manage stem borer, farmers were advised to spray a mixture of 2 grams of Cartop Hydrochloride per litre of water. Regarding saline (alkaline) paddy fields where tillers and plants are dying, the recommendation was to drain the water and allow the soil to dry; to prevent recurrence, cultivating green manure crops like Jeeluga (Sesbania), Janumu (Sunnhemp), or green gram between May and June during the pre-rainy season can help reduce soil salinity, alongside practising crop rotation.
For cotton crops, upon observing an infestation of sap-sucking pests, the recommendation was made to spray a mixture containing 1.5g of Acephate or 2.0ml of Chlorpyrifos combined with 5ml of neem oil per litre of water. For maize crops, to control the fall armyworm, farmers were advised to spray 0.5ml of Spinetoram per litre of water and to install pheromone traps at a rate of 10 per acre. For turmeric crops, to control leaf spot disease, the recommendation was to use one millilitre of Propiconazole per litre of water and spray.
