43-feet-tall and 47 metric tonnes of mammoth wooden chariot glides majestically
TIRUMALA, SEPTEMBER 22, 2026: The temple town Tirumala reverberated with the chants of ‘Govinda, Govinda!’ as thousands of devotees took part in the ‘Rathotsavam’ (car festival) observed here on the penultimate day of the ongoing annual Salakatla Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara on Tuesday.
Sri Malayappa Swamy, along with His consorts, Sridevi and Bhudevi, glided along the four mada streets of Tirumala on the chariot. Thousands of devotees participated and pulled the divine chariot with utmost devotion.
Rathotsavam has been a traditional practice since ancient times. Rathotsavam is especially famous and is believed to bestow liberation, as described in sacred texts. Authorities ensured all safety measures during the procession.
The chariot signifies self-realisation and the distinction between body and soul.
Both the Pontiffs of Tirumala, TTD Chairman Sri B.R. Naidu, EO Sri Muddada Ravi Chandra, board members, Additional EO Sri Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, CV&SO Sri Murali Krishna, engineering officials, and others participated.
