Unidentified woman’s murder: Choppadandi police arrest a contract killer and four others

KARIMNAGAR, FEBRUARY 06, 2025: The Choppadandi police have a mystery behind the murder of an unidentified dead body of a woman near the SRSP canal at Kurikyala village of Gangadhara mandal on Karimnagar to Jagtial road on January 27, 2025.

It turned out to be a contract killing with the arrest of the contract killer and four others. Those arrested have been identified as Velpula Kalyan (26), a native of Subashnagar, Luxxettipet, Gumpula Raghu (27), a resident of Mittapalli, Luxxettipet, Kullumalla Narmada (23), Ramakrishnapur, Banda Venkatesh (32), Kothapet, Endapalli and Kullumalla Rajalingam (65) a native of Ramakrishnapur.

Disclosing this to newsmen on Thursday, Choppadandi Inspector R Prakash Goud said that following the information about an unidentified woman’s body found on the shores of SRP canal at Kurikyala village on Januaruy 27, 2025, the police team led by him and Gangadhara SI G Narender Reddy visited the spot and found that the woman was strangulated and stabbed with a sharp weapon and dumped at the site.

Later, the police posted the news and pics about the recovery of the unidentified body on social media, local media and electronic media. On January 29, the victim’s sister Choudhara Uma Devi approached the police and stated that it was her sister Meda Mamatha (25), a resident of Mancherial town, and she recognized her body in the mortuary. Based on the information provided by Uma Devi her sister Mamatha had gone out along with her four-year-old son on January 25 and did not return from Tilaknagar in Mancherial town.

The Choppadandi Inspector and his team screened the CCTV footage of Tilaknagar in Mancherial town and found that Mamatha was boarding a car along with her son. The police using the technology found that the accused person had hired a self-driving car and went to Chennai. The Police team rushed to Chennai and found his location in a hotel along with the kid. After seeing the police, he escaped by leaving the child. The police handed over the child to his grandparents.

 On February 5 at around 3 pm, the police nabbed the accused Velpula Kalyan during the vehicle checking programme at Venkatarayapalli stage of Gangadhara mandal. Following the interrogation, he confessed to committing the crime of killing Mamatha by taking ‘contract killing’ for Rs 5 lakhs. The accused informed the police that Mamatha, who had distanced from her husband, was in a live-in relationship with a Singareni employee Kullumalla Bhaskar.

 Bhaskar’s family had counselled him to mend his ways, but he did not deter from visiting Mamatha and supporting her family by giving his salary. Irked over this, his sister Narmada and Raghu along with her father Rajalingu and brother-in-law Venkatesh hatched a plan to eliminate Mamatha and hired contract killer Velpula Kalyan and settled the deal for Rs 5 lakhs and initially handed over Rs 60,000.

 After collecting the phone number of Mamatha, Kalyan moved closely with her for about a week by giving her the necessary financial assistance. On January 25, he hired a self-driving car boarded her and her four-year-old son and roamed around Mancherial town till late evening. Later, he killed her in the car by stabbing her neck and later used a nylon thread and strangulated her to death.

 Later, he informed the family members of the death and collected the remaining cash and as per plan, he dumped the body of the victim at the SRSP canal at Kurikyala village. The Choppadandi Inspector the entire police including the constabulary staff for their work and detection of the crime.
