MUMBAI, AUGUST 24, 2026: Three newborns were killed, and six others were shifted to a super speciality hospital when a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra state, in the early hours of Monday (August 24, 2026).
A devastating fire broke out in the NICU on the third floor of the hospital following an unexpected explosion or short circuit involving a ventilator inside.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences over the death of three infants and ordered a high-level inquiry. He assured that financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the family of each infant who died in the fire mishap.
