Ponnam Prabhakar rules out conspiracy and orders an inquiry into the fire mishap
HYDERABAD, MAY 18, 2025: In a devastating fire mishap, at least 17 persons were killed and more than 20 persons sustained serious burn injuries at a G-plus 2 building in Gulzar Houz chowrasta near Charminar in the Old City of Hyderabad on Sunday morning.
The fire broke out in the ground floor of the building due to electric short-circuit and spread to other floors. A thick black smoke engulfed the area, waking residents in nearby buildings who were alarmed by the strong smell and rapidly spreading smoke.
Following the fire, there was a blast of an air conditioner compressor, causing injuries to the inmates of the building. On information, the fire tenders from Moghalpura and Gowliguda fire stations rushed to the spot and started the fire-fighting operation and rescued 17 persons who were trapped on the first floor and shifted to hospitals.
In all, 12 fire tenders from various parts of the town were pressed into service to put off the fire. A total of 11 vehicles, one firefighting robot, 17 fire officers and 70 fire personnel were involved to extinguish the fire. The fire services department had also used Advanced Fire Robot and Bronto Skylift hydraulic platform. The fire services authorities said the cause of fire is under investigation and the value of the property is yet to be ascertained.
Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar, who is also Hyderabad incharge Minister, said that the fire mishap took place due to a short circuit. Dismissing any suggestion of a conspiracy or such behind it, he announced that the probe will be conducted.
Prime Minister condoles the loss of lives due to the fire tragedy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to fire tragedy in Hyderabad, Telangana. Shri Modi also wished a speedy recovery for those injured in the accident.
The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia from PMNRF of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.
The Prime Minister’s Office posted on X;
“Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Hyderabad, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the fire accident that occurred at Gulzar Houz in Old City.
He directed the officials to expedite rescue operations and save the families trapped in the fire. All arrangements should be made to offer better treatment to the injured in the incident, the Chief Minister instructed the Health department officials.
BRS Working President KT Rama Rao said he was extremely shocked and pained over the incident.
“Details emerging from the Gulzar House fire tragedy in Old City are very sad. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy. Wishing a speedy recovery to those injured,” Rama Rao said on
