KARIMNAGAR, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026: The birth anniversary of Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, the father of Indian Statistical Education, was celebrated at Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree College for Women in Nagunur, Karimnagar town on Thursday (September 10, 2026).
On the occasion, the Department of Statistics of the college conducted a seminar on “Statistics Career Roadmap.” The programme highlighted the significant role and contributions of Prof. C. R. Rao to the field of Statistics and his remarkable achievements. HoD S. Gouthami spoke about the importance of Statistics and guided students on career opportunities and the growing scope of the subject in various fields.
Principal T. Malathi addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of Statistics in education, research, administration and professional fields. Vice-Principal S. Padmaja participated in the programme. *Madhusri, a III Year M.St.Ds student, delivered a speech highlighting the significance and applications of Statistics. Faculty members K. Radhika, D. Mamatha and M. Radhika, along with students, attended the programme and actively participated in the event.
CR Rao, a prominent Indian-American Mathematician and Statistician was born to a Telugu family in Hadagali, Karnataka. His schooling was completed in Gudur, Nuzvid, Nandigama, and Visakhapatnam, all in Andhra Pradesh.
He received an MSc in mathematics from Andhra University and an MA in statistics from Calcutta University in 1943. He obtained a PhD degree at King’s College at Cambridge University. He added a DSc degree, also from Cambridge, in 1965.
Rao first worked at the Indian Statistical Institute and the Anthropological Museum in Cambridge.
Later he held several important positions, as the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor and National Professor in India, University Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and Eberly Professor and Chair of Statistics and Director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis at Pennsylvania State University.
Rao has received many honours. He was awarded the title of Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government (1968) and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
