NEW DELHI, MARCH 24, 2026: In a significant milestone for India’s cooperative sector, Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Limited (BBSSL) has emerged as the country’s largest Multi-State Cooperative Society within a short span of three years since its registration. With a membership base exceeding 37,000 cooperative institutions and a presence across 34 states, BBSSL reflects the rapid expansion and growing acceptance of cooperative-led models in agriculture and rural development. The organisation has also witnessed strong participation from Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), strengthening its grassroots reach and operational network.
Established under the guidance of the Ministry of Cooperation, BBSSL is aligned with the national vision of Sahkar se Samriddhi, aimed at revitalising the cooperative sector and enhancing rural livelihoods. A key innovation introduced by BBSSL is enabling PACS to move beyond traditional credit functions and actively participate in procurement, processing, and marketing activities. This integration of grassroots institutions into larger cooperative frameworks is expected to diversify income streams, improve financial sustainability, and create new economic opportunities at the village level.
BBSSL’s strategic focus on quality seed production and distribution is expected to play a crucial role in improving agricultural productivity and ensuring seed security for farmers. By reducing dependence on private intermediaries and leveraging cooperative networks, the initiative aims to provide affordable and timely access to inputs, particularly benefiting small and marginal farmers. The rapid growth of BBSSL highlights a broader transformation in the cooperative landscape, driven by scale, digital adoption, and institutional integration. It stands as a model for strengthening farmer-centric value chains and promoting inclusive, sustainable rural development.
