GTA claims that they were collecting only 10 months’ salary and shelling out two months’ salary as Income Tax
KARIMNAGAR, FEBRUARY 27, 2026: Telangana Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao’s report to the 16th Finance Commission, highlighting a four-fold increase in the state’s monthly salary and pension bill (from ₹1,500 crore in 2014 to ₹6,000 crore) has irked government employees, including teachers.

The statement, which flagged high salaries—including mentioning, in a certain context, high earnings for certain staff in specific departments—as a burden on the exchequer, has raised concerns about potential salary restructuring or freezes.

Irked over the Chief Secretary’s statement, the Government Teachers Association Karimnagar district unit president Gajula Ravinder and general secretary M Chandrashekhar Reddy expressed their ire and stated that they were paying two months of their salary as Income Tax every year and collecting only 10 months’ salary.
They found fault with the Chief Secretary for not providing PRC, Das and retirement benefits to the employees and making statements on high salaries to teachers and other government employees. Stating that the teachers were discharging their duties as teachers and participating in election duties and other surveys, they demanded that the government clear the pending bills of employees.

Telangana chief secretary K Ramakrishna Rao made these revelations on Wednesday, during a conference on the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission. He said that the state is spending ₹6,000 crore per month on salary which is four times the outgo (total money paid to individuals) when the state was formed in 2014. The chief secretary said that salary and pensions of workers have expanded 300% due to successive pay revisions, which also clashed with election cycles and led to a surge in expenditures.
Among the highest paid workers in the state are chief engineers in Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO), Telangana State Transmission Corporation Limited and Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited.
