Three Barrages taken up as part of the Kaleshwaram project by the BRS government have been damaged due to poor-quality work
RAMAGUNDAM, AUGUST 01, 2026: Minister for Irrigation N N Uttam Kumar Reddy has ridiculed the opposition parties for claiming that the Sripada Yellampalli Project waters are Kaleshwaram project waters.
Reminding that the Sripada Yellampalli project was taken up by then Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy on July 28, 2014, he said that the inauguration of the project should have been taken up by then CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, but could not happen due to various reasons.
Mr Uttam Kumar Reddy visited the Sripada Yellampalli Project in Ramagundam of Peddapally district on Saturday, along with Minister for IT D Sridhar Babu, Minister for Social Welfare Adluri Laxman Kumar, Minister for Labour G Vivek Venkat Swamy, Government Whip Ch Vijayaramana Rao, legislators Makhan Singh Raj Thakur, Gaddam Vinod Kumar, Dr Sanjay Kumar and others. They inspected the project and pump house as part of a high-level tour of north Telangana irrigation facilities.
Speaking on this occasion, the Irrigation Minister said that the project constructed during the Congress were still intact and providing irrigation and drinking water facilities to the people of the region. The BRS government constructed the Kaleshwaram project with three barrages viz Medaram, Annaram and Sundilla, which were damaged. He said that the Yellampalli project was taken up as part of the Pranahita-Chevella project and flayed the BRS leaders for claiming that the project was taken up as part of the Kaleshwaram project
He said that the Congress government had constructed the Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP), and the foundation stone for the project was laid by the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1963. The Kadem project was taken up by the Congress government in 1959 and the Sripada Yellampalli project in 2004.
He clarified that the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) had given written instructions not to store water in three reservoirs taken up under the Kaleshwaram project. He said that following the instructions of NDSA and the Central Water Commission had decided to reconstruct the Kaleshwaram project works downstream of the Yellampalli project.
Instead of taking up Sheet-pile foundation as per DPR at three barrages of the Kaleshwaram project, the BRS government had taken up Secant pile foundation, causing poor foundations for the three reservoirs of the KLIP. He alleged that the BRS government had not provided irrigation facilities to at least one acre of land through KLIP.
Minister for IT D Sridhar Babu said that they would be visiting SRSP, Kadem and Yellampalli projects and chalk out future course of action. Reminding that the SRSP, Flood flow canal, Mid Manair Dam, Sripada Yellampalli project etc were taken up by the Congress government, he said that the NDSA had stated that the water should not be stored at three barrages of the Kaleshwaram project.
