Drugs Control Laboratory secures NABL accreditation for its standards and accurate results

HYDERABAD, MARCH 26, 2024: Drugs Control Laboratory of the Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Government of Telangana, has been granted the “Certificate of Accreditation” by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The NABL accreditation, in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017, is a recognition that the Drugs Control Laboratory meets rigorous quality standards and can produce reliable and accurate results.

The Drugs Control Laboratory of the Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Government of Telangana, serves as the State Statutory Laboratory designated for the testing of drugs by the Government Analyst in accordance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Drugs Control Laboratory, situated within the premises of the Directorate of Drugs Control Administration, Vengalrao Nagar, Hyderabad, functions under the administrative control of the Director General, Drugs Control Administration, Government of Telangana. The laboratory discharges its duties through its personnel including Senior Scientific Officers, Junior Scientific Officers, and Junior Analysts.

Drugs Control Laboratory carries out the statutory function of analytical quality control of drugs and cosmetics manufactured within the country on behalf of the Drug Control Administration, Government of Telangana. Drugs Control Laboratory conducts analysis of Drugs and Pharmaceutical formulations received as Samples from Drugs Inspectors of the DCA, Telangana.

Drugs Control Laboratory utilizes the Quality Control Labs portal https://qclabs.telangana.gov.in  which facilitates online submission of drug samples drawn by Drugs Inspectors and the issuance of test reports online by the Government Analyst. The drugs declared as Sub-standard (Not of Standard Quality) by the Drugs Control Laboratory are published on the official portal of the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana. http://dca.telangana.gov.in/dd.php

In the year 2023, the Drugs Control Laboratory, Telangana, tested 4553 samples of drugs from the market and declared 79 samples as sub-standard drugs. Details of sub-standard drugs declared by the Drugs Control Laboratory

Drugs Control Laboratory also conducts analysis of drugs received from variousmedicines procuring departments under the Government of Telangana, the Telangana State Medical Services Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC), and the Police Department.

The infrastructure of the laboratory has been upgraded under the ‘Central Sponsored Scheme’. The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated analytical instruments, including High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS).

The microbiology section has been upgraded with the necessary infrastructure to conduct microbiological testing of drugs including injectables, ophthalmic solutions, and other sterile products.

National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), is an authoritative body in India which provides formal recognition of technical competence for specific tests, measurements, and calibration services based on international standards.  ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is an international standard which sets outs the general requirements for the competence of testing & calibration laboratories.

The Grant of Accreditation as per ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 is carried out by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The NABL accreditation ensures that laboratories meet rigorous quality standards and can produce reliable and accurate results.
