Advanced treatment for cancer at Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad with less radiation and fewer sittings for treatment
KARIMNAGAR, SEPTEMBER 26, 2025: The first hospital in India to launch MR Linac radiation was Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, which installed the Elekta Unity MR Linac in June 2023. This advanced technology integrates a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner with a linear accelerator, allowing for real-time imaging and precise radiation delivery during treatment sessions, marking a significant advancement in cancer care.
Talking to newsmen here at Yashoda Medical Centre in Karimnagar town on Friday, Dr M Suneetha, Radiation Oncologist, Clinical Director, Yashoda hospital, Hi-tech city, Hyderabad, said that the Yashoda hospital had achieved a milestone of completing more than 300 cases treated on MR Linac successfully. Among the major treatments conducted include: Neurooncology, including all benign and malignant brain tumours, prostate cancers, head and neck cancers, gynaecological cancers, Lung, Liver, Rectum and other cancers.
Dr Suneetha said that there has been 100 per cent compliance with the treatment, all the patients started pm treatment completed wth grade 1 or grade 2 complications. It’s indeed satisfying to see the excellent results among the patients not only from India but across the world, she said and added that the patients suffer less side effects and fewer sittings for radiation when compared to conventional chemotherapy methods etc.
In the field of cancer treatment, radiation therapy (RT) plays a crucial role in combating this formidable disease. Technological advancements, particularly in advanced linear accelerators (Linacs) have propelled radiation therapy to new heights, offering improved treatment outcomes and reduced side effects.
MR Linac represents a monumental leap forward in precision. By seamlessly integrating a high-field MR imaging system with a linear accelerator, it provides radiation oncologists with unprecedented visibility and accuracy in tumour targeting.
With Elekta Unity, we can now make real-time assessments, ensuring that the radiation beam is precisely aimed at only the tumour, regardless of any anatomical shifts or movements. This level of accuracy translates into improved treatment outcomes, as we can confidently deliver higher doses of radiation to the demarcated tumour while minimising damage to the surrounding healthy tissues, she stated.
