A solution to space constraints… Focus on improved power supply
Modern substation constructed at Telangana Chowk at a cost of ₹6.92 crore: CMD Karnati Varun Reddy
KARIMNAGAR, OCTOBER 06, 2026: Chairman & Managing Director of TGNPDCL Karnati Varun Reddy stated that indoor substations would significantly help overcome the acute shortage of land in urban areas while ensuring quality and reliable power supply to consumers.
As part of strengthening the power infrastructure in Karimnagar city, CMD Karnati Varun Reddy technically charged the 33/11 kV Indoor Substation constructed on the premises of Circus grounds at Indira Chowk on Tuesday. He stated that this is the first indoor substation constructed in Karimnagar under the TGNPDCL jurisdiction.
Speaking on the occasion, the CMD said that, keeping pace with the increasing power demand, TGNPDCL is developing a modern power supply network through technologically advanced indoor substations. These substations enable high-capacity power infrastructure within limited space while ensuring improved, quality and uninterrupted power supply to consumers.
He stated that another indoor substation would also be established at the Collectorate office complex in Karimnagar, keeping in view the city’s development and growing power requirements. Necessary provisions have already been made for future expansion of the indoor substation capacity and feeders, he added.

The modern indoor substation has been constructed at a cost of ₹6.92 crore within an area of just 484 square yards. The ground floor houses the control room along with modern switchgear panels, while the first floor accommodates the Sub-Division and Section offices.
The substation is receiving 33 kV power supply from the 132 kV Vavilalapalli and Padmanagar substations. An additional 33 kV feeder has also been kept ready for future extension to other substations. Initially, power supply will be provided through six 11 kV feeders, while provision has also been made for installation of another two 11 kV feeders to meet future requirements.
With the commissioning of this indoor substation, the electrical load on the 33/11 kV SRR, Bhagatnagar and Saptagiri substations in Karimnagar city will be reduced, thereby improving the overall power supply capacity and reliability in the urban area.
The substation is equipped with two 8 MVA power transformers using ester-oil technology. The CMD explained that ester oil has a higher flash point, providing enhanced safety and better control of fire-related risks. Its higher moisture tolerance also improves transformer insulation life and enables the transformers to efficiently handle higher temperatures and increased loads. This is expected to reduce maintenance requirements and long-term maintenance costs.
The control panels installed at the substation are equipped with SCADA facilities, IED relays and advanced RTU systems, which have been integrated with the Control Centre at the TGNPDCL Corporate Office. This enables remote monitoring of the substation and facilitates necessary control operations. The use of advanced technology will help detect power supply interruptions quickly and enable more efficient restoration measures.

The CMD further stated that under the TGNPDCL jurisdiction, G+1 control room slab works have been completed for the Pulang Rythu Bazaar Indoor Substation in Nizamabad Circle. Similarly, construction of substation pillars at Vaikunthadham in Hanamkonda Circle is progressing rapidly. He also informed that the land acquisition process for the Girls High School Indoor Substation has been completed and works are in progress.
In Kamareddy Circle, the tender process for construction of an indoor substation at the Kamareddy Municipal Office has been completed. Similarly, in Khammam Circle, the tender process for the indoor substation proposed at the Khammam Bus Stand area has also been completed and works are progressing actively.
Mr Karnati Varun Reddy expressed confidence that indoor substations will play a crucial role in strengthening the power network to meet future requirements. He stated that the modern indoor substations being developed with advanced technology would significantly reduce power interruptions in urban areas and improve the quality and reliability of power supply.
Directors V. Mohan Rao and T. Madhusudhan, Chief Engineers K. Tirumala Rao, Surender and Annapurna, Karimnagar SE Vijender Reddy, DEs, AEs and other officials participated in the programme.
