Sudha Murthy honoured on Women’s day by nominating her to Rajya Sabha

PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and others congratulate 

NEW DELHI, MARCH 08, 2024: In what could be said as pleasant gift on the occasion of International Women’s Day, eminent philanthropist and author Sudha Murthy was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President of India Droupadi Murmu on Friday.

Ms Sudha Murthy (73) was born in Shiggaon, Haveri district of Karnataka, in 1950. A graduate in Computer Science engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), she was the first woman engineer at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), which is now Tata Motors. She’s married to N. R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder, Infosys.

She chaired the Infosys Foundation for over two decades, and through the foundation carried out several philanthropic activities. She is a renowned author and motivational speaker in both Kannada and English. Her books for children have been bestsellers. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2023. Her daughter Akshata Murthy is married to U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness on nomination of Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha.  The Prime Minister posted on X :

Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated Sudha Muthy. He posted on X “My Heartiest congratulations @SmtSudhaMurthy ji on being nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Your struggles, victories and courage set a brilliant example of what Nari Shakthi can achieve for our society and out nation. A warm welcome to the upper house where I am sure you will further embolden the voice of democracy”..
