Nigeria to honour Narendra Modi with Grand Commander of the Order of Niger Award

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 17, 2024: Nigeria to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its award ‘The Grand Commander of The Order of the Niger’ [GCON].

Queen Elizabeth is the only foreign dignitary awarded GCON in 1969. This will be the 17th International award being conferred to PM Modi by a country.

The Prime Minister arrived in Nigeria on Sunday on the first leg of his three-nation visit at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years. He is on a five-day visit to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana.

Earlier, Mr Modi arrived in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister received a ceremonial welcome from Nigeria’s Minister for Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Ezenmo Wike, who presented him with the symbolic ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the gesture, saying it reflects ‘the trust and honour bestowed on the Prime Minister by the people of Nigeria’. (/With PIB inputs).
