KARIMNAGAR, JANUARY 25, 2025: The Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree College for Women, Nagunuru, Karimnagar, celebrated National Voters Day by administering the pledge to the students on Saturday.
On this occasion, the students were enlightened on the importance of National Voters’ Day which is celebrated annually on January 25 in India to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI), established in 1950. The day is a tribute to the democratic spirit of the nation and aims to encourage active voter participation in the electoral process. Observed since 2011, the day has become a significant event to highlight the importance of voting and to empower citizens, especially the youth, to contribute to the functioning of democracy.
Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility of every citizen in a democracy. National Voters’ Day underscores this principle by raising awareness about the significance of electoral participation. It also serves as a reminder of the ECI’s role in conducting free, fair and transparent elections, which are the cornerstone of a healthy democracy.
The celebration of this day aims to address challenges such as voter apathy, lack of awareness and low voter turnout, especially among the younger generation. It also focuses on increasing the enrolment of new voters and ensuring that every eligible citizen is included in the electoral roll.
The Nehru Yuva Kendra, Karimnagar, which had conducted essay writing and elocution competitions on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary recently, distributed the prizes to the winners. Principal T Malathi, NSS programme officer K Geetha Rani, faculty member S Padmaja, NYK volunteer Srinivas and others were also present.
