HYDERABAD, OCTOBER 09, 2026: The Department of Posts is observing National Postal Week from October 9 to 15, 2026, beginning with World Post Day on October 9. Addressing a press conference at the Dak Sadan in Hyderabad today, Shri D.S.V.R. Murthy, Chief Postmaster General (CPMG), Telangana Circle, highlighted the achievements, technological advancements and citizen-centric initiatives of India Post.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Murthy said that World Post Day commemorates the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. This year’s theme, “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” reflects India Post’s transformation into a modern, technology-enabled and citizen-centric service organisation while retaining its extensive physical presence. He said that India Post operates the world’s largest postal network, with 1,64,999 post offices, including 1,49,385 in rural areas. Telangana Circle has 36 Head Post Offices, 759 Sub Post Offices and 5,424 Branch Post Offices, supported by 6,514 departmental employees and 10,623 Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), ensuring access to essential services in rural, urban and remote areas. Highlighting employment generation, he said that across 17 Rozgar Mela tranches, the Department issued 1,86,202 appointment/engagement offers, including 1,51,348 to Gramin Dak Sevaks. In Telangana Circle, 1,272 candidates, including 1,123 Gramin Dak Sevaks, received appointment/engagement.
As part of the National Postal Week celebrations, Shri Murthy distributed prizes to the Telangana Circle winners of the UPU International Letter Writing Competition 2026. He further stated that National Postal Week will feature a series of activities highlighting the diverse services and initiatives of the Department of Posts. He highlighted the Department’s efforts, under the leadership of Union Minister for Communications Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Minister of State for Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, to improve service delivery, adopt new technologies and enhance operational efficiency while maintaining its public service mandate. Recalling the transition from inland letters and postcards to SMS, WhatsApp and email, Shri Murthy emphasised that while technology has transformed communication, the value of personal connections remains significant. He reiterated that India Post continues to evolve with changing communication needs while preserving its longstanding commitment to connecting people and delivering essential services.

Highlighting digital transformation, he said that the rollout of APT 2.0, an indigenously developed technology platform, marks an important milestone. DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number), developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO, provides a standardised 10-character geo-coded digital address reference. Speaking about delivery services, Shri Murthy said that the Door Step Service (DSS) application enables real-time delivery tracking. The 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post services, introduced in Hyderabad on March 17, 2026, have recorded more than 1.33 lakh articles, with time-bound delivery provided for 94 PIN codes. UPI and card payments are also available at post office counters, while postmen can collect Cash on Delivery (COD) amounts through the DSS application.
He further informed that Telangana has 14 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, which facilitated 1,66,478 passport transactions during FY 2025–26 and another 87,100 up to September 2026. The 263 Aadhaar Centres across the State recorded 4,75,592 transactions during FY 2025–26 and 3,17,146 up to September 2026. Around 20 lakh beneficiaries receive Cheyutha pensions every month through the postal network, involving approximately ₹500 crore in monthly disbursements. The Department is also supporting StreeNidhi in collecting self-help group (SHG) loan repayments through Branch Post Offices, while the Holy Blessing initiative has facilitated doorstep delivery of thousands of prasadam consignments.
Emphasising financial inclusion, Shri Murthy said that Telangana Postal Circle had 1.07 crore live Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) accounts as of March 31, 2026. The Circle aims to bring 25% of Telangana’s rural population under financial inclusion through postal financial services by the end of FY 2026–27 and envisages bringing at least 10% of POSB accounts into digital transactions during the same financial year. Internet banking, mobile banking and other digital facilities are being promoted to improve customer convenience.
He added that Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) continue to provide insurance coverage to citizens. While PLI eligibility has been expanded to professionals and graduates beyond government employees, RPLI has also been extended to urban citizens. During FY 2025–26, Telangana Circle sold 71,233 new PLI and RPLI policies and collected ₹590.13 crore in premiums. Sharing the Circle’s financial performance, Shri Murthy said that Telangana Circle achieved revenue of ₹596.71 crore during FY 2025–26 against a target of ₹661.88 crore, and ₹322.28 crore up to September 2026 in the current financial year.
