Breastfed child has higher IQ level, says Dr Roja

JAGTIAL, AUGUST 08, 2024: To mark the World Breastfeeding week celebrations, the NSS unit of Government Degree college for women in Jagtial on Thursday organised an awareness programme on the importance of breastfeeding to the infants.

On this occasion, eminent gynaecologist Dr Roja (Kaveri children and maternity hospital) said that breast milk was the ideal food for an infant and IQ (Intelligence Quotient) of a breastfed child was found to be higher than a baby that was not breastfed. She said under normal conditions, no other food was required by the baby until six months from the birth. She said that the breastfeeding was not only safe, hygiene and cheap, but also prevents malnutrition and reduces infant mortality.

She said  “World Breastfeeding Week is observed every year in the first week of August to commemorate the declaration signed in August 1990 by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF and other international organisations to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The slogan and theme for the World Breastfeeding Week this year is ‘Breastfeeding for all”. The doctor also clarified various doubts raised by the students.

College principal K Ramakrishna, vice principal Chandraiah, NSS programme officers N Sangeetha Rani, G Srilatha and D Sujatha, faculty members Vasavi, Neeraja, Pramod Kumar, Varaprasad, Ramachandram, Jamuna and others were also present.
