In Sri Madbhagavatham, the Gajendra Moksham episode is popular as Sri Maha Vishnu instantly comes to the rescue of Gajendra and gets him relieved from the clutches of a Crocodile (Makara).
Elephant (Gaja) also known as Airaavatha (four-tusked white elephant) carrier of Lord Indra that got manifested from the ocean during Ksheera-Saagara Mathanam.
The vahanam and concept behind is a reminder to everyone that Lord always rescues the true devotees from all sorts of risks and troubles like he did for Gajendra.
