HYDERABAD, APRIL 09, 2024: In a shocking incident, senior IPS officer Rajiv Ratan has passed away on Tuesday morning following a massive heart attack.
The IPS officer went out for a morning walk on Tuesday and complained of severe chest pain and returned back home. Later, his family members shifted him to a private hospital for treatment. He died while undergoing treatment. He was in the race for the DGP post after retirement of M Mahender Reddy.
The 1991 batch IPS officer, Rajiv Ratan is presently Director-General of Vigilance and Enforcement and ex-officio principal secretary to the state government. He oversaw inquiry into the sinking of two piers of Medigadda barrage of Kaleshwaram Lift irrigation project. He also made a power point presentation during the visit of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and his cabinet colleagues to the project site recently.
Mr Rajiv Ratan worked as SP of integrated Karimnagar district from 2004 to 2005 when the then Congress government was holding peace talks with the Naxalites. Later, he also worked as Karimnagar range DIG for about a year. He worked in United Nations peacekeeping mission in Bosnia for around five years.
Mr Ratan has won accolades for his straight forwardness and instant justice to the petitioners who approached him during his tenure as SP of Karimnagar district. During the peace talks with Naxalites, when some of the Naxalites were regrouping in the district, the Karimnagar police conducted an encounter killing few Naxalites during January 2005.
As Karimnagar SP, Mr Rajiv Ratan accorded top priority for the maintenance of law and order. When the BJP leaders tried to gatecrash into police headquarters to hoist national flag as part of the Telangana liberation day celebrations (September 17), Mr Ratan took the baton and personally chased away the protestors.
