Participating as chief guest, NABARD Telangana General Manager R Ganapathy called upon the cooperative banks and RRBs to accord priority for extending financial assistance to the farmers for the diversification of high-value crops for securing good remunerative prices for their produce and strengthening the agro-economy of the state. He also stressed the need for value addition to the farm produce through Farmer Producer Organisations. He also stated that Amul was the biggest FPO in the country by milk and milk products with value addition.
Stating that Telangana state was producing the highest paddy production in the country, he quipped that the state is turning into the ‘diabetes capital’ with the consumption of rice. Reminding that apples and oranges were available throughout the year, he said that crop diversification was the need of the hour to get good prices for the farmers. He said enhanced institutional finance is crucial for boosting farm productivity, promoting diversification and generating rural employment.

Telangana state was consuming the highest quantity of milk, but production was only one-third of the demand, and the remaining milk was procured from the neighbouring states, he said and added that Telangana state was also consuming the highest amount of meat in the country, but there was less production.
He informed the bankers of the need to finance dairy units, animal husbandry and fisheries and also MSMEs. He said that the fisheries in the inland waters would fetch more revenue for the farmers. Besides, the consumption of fish was healthy for the people of the state as it contains many nutrients, he added.
The Banks are born to finance. We should not neglect the farmers and MSMEs in extending financial assistance for their economic activities and the benefit of the country, he added. He urged the bankers to proactively support the modernisation of agricultural activities to help the farmers reap riches.
