KARIMNAGAR, AUGUST 07, 2026: The 101st birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the eminent agricultural scientist and widely acclaimed as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, was celebrated grandly by the Department of Botany at SRR Government Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Karimnagar, on Friday.
The programme was organised with the objective of creating awareness among students about the outstanding contributions of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan to Indian agriculture, food security, scientific farming and sustainable agricultural development. Principal Prof. Kalvakunta Ramakrishna and TGCGTA General Secretary Kadaru Surender Reddy attended the programme as guests. The programme was chaired by Prof. Tirukovela Srinivas, Head of the Department of Botany and Controller of Examinations.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Prof. Kalvakunta Ramakrishna said that Dr. M.S. Swaminathan brought revolutionary changes to Indian agriculture and laid a strong foundation for the country’s food security. By promoting high-yielding varieties and modern agricultural practices, he played a significant role in transforming India from a food-deficit nation towards self-sufficiency in food production. He called upon students to draw inspiration from Dr. Swaminathan’s scientific outlook, dedication and spirit of national service.
Kadaru Surender Reddy, TGCGTA General Secretary, said that Dr. Swaminathan played a pivotal role in India’s Green Revolution and contributed immensely to strengthening the country’s food security. He highlighted Dr. Swaminathan’s vision for farmers’ welfare, sustainable agriculture, environmental protection and food security for future generations. He stated that the conferment of the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2024, India’s highest civilian honour, was a fitting recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation.
Chairing the programme, Prof. Tirukovela Srinivas, Head of the Department of Botany and Controller of Examinations, said that Dr. Swaminathan’s research and scientific vision gave a new direction to Indian agriculture. His contribution to increasing food production through high-yielding crop varieties and modern agricultural technologies was remarkable.
Prof. Srinivas further emphasised the need for another Green Revolution—one that is chemical-free, sustainable and health-oriented. He stated that excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides can adversely affect soil fertility, soil microorganisms and overall soil health. He stressed the importance of promoting organic, natural, eco-friendly and scientifically sound agricultural practices to ensure safe food production, healthy soils and a healthy society.
He further stated that the true tribute to Dr. Swaminathan would not merely be achieving higher agricultural productivity, but developing sustainable agricultural systems that protect farmers’ welfare, soil health, biodiversity, the environment, safe food production and human health. He encouraged students to develop scientific awareness and contribute to sustainable agricultural development in the future.
The programme was attended by the faculty members of the Department of Botany, Routhu Radhakrishna, M.D. Taher Hussain, Padala Thirupathi, K. Kala Jyothi, Ande Bunga Thirupathi, M.D. Thajuddin and A. Swaroopa Rani. A large number of UG and PG students participated in the programme and paid tribute to the remarkable contributions of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan to Indian agriculture and the nation.
