KARIMNAGAR, OCTOBER 08, 2026: Just as food and water are essential for our body, sleep is equally important.
Sleep is a natural form of rest for the body and brain after working all day. Without proper sleep, not only physical health but also mental health gets affected.
What happens to the body during sleep?
While we sleep, the body does not merely rest; it carries out several vital processes. The brain organizes the information gathered throughout the day. Processes such as tissue repair, muscle recovery, and immune system strengthening take place. That is why, after a good night’s sleep, the body feels light and the mind feels calm in the morning.
Benefits of sleep:
Proper sleep enhances memory, concentration, and cognitive abilities. It reduces mental stress and irritability. Sleep also supports the immune system. Good sleep plays a crucial role in weight management, as well as controlling blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
How long should you sleep?
Generally, adults require about 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day. Needs may vary slightly depending on age, health condition, and daily physical activity. It is particularly advisable for older adults to maintain a disciplined routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
Tips for good sleep:
Make it a habit to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Reduce the use of screens like mobile phones and TVs before bedtime. Avoid heavy late-night meals and excessive intake of coffee or tea. Ensure the bedroom is quiet, dark, and kept at a comfortable temperature.
What about daytime naps?
Sleeping for long periods during the day can disrupt night sleep. If needed, you can take a brief power nap. However, care should be taken to ensure long daytime sleep does not become a daily habit.
Do not ignore insomnia:
If problems such as frequent difficulty falling asleep, waking up repeatedly during the night, or feeling exhausted even after waking up in the morning persist, the underlying cause should be identified. It is especially advisable to consult a doctor if you experience heavy snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, or excessive daytime drowsiness.
Good Sleep — Good Health:
Sleep should not be viewed as a waste of time, but rather as an essential investment in health. A healthy life is possible only when adequate daily sleep, a balanced diet, physical exercise, and a peaceful mind come together.
To start the day actively, end the night with a peaceful sleep.
