KARIMNAGAR, SEPTEMBER 02, 2026: To create awareness among students, researchers, and faculty about the rapidly advancing fields of biotechnology and genome editing in modern science and technology, a one-day national conference on “Recent Trends in Modern Biotechnology – With Special Reference to Genome Editing Technology” was organised by the Department of Botany at S.R.R. Government Arts & Science College (Autonomous), in Karimnagar town on Wednesday.
During the conference, it was highlighted that with biological research advancing at a rapid pace globally, genome editing technology plays a crucial role in understanding the genetic structure of organisms, making precise scientific modifications, and developing novel solutions in the agricultural and medical sectors. In particular, modern gene-editing techniques like CRISPR were noted as opening new avenues for future biological research.
College Principal Prof. K. Ramakrishna acted as the Patron of the conference, while Prof. Surya Prakash G. Ponnam from the Department of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, School of Sciences, Tezpur University, Assam, attended as the Keynote Speaker. He spoke extensively on the evolution of modern biotechnology, the significance of genome editing technologies, their real-world applications, and future prospects.

The keynote speaker explained that genome editing can yield immense benefits across various areas, including the development of disease-resistant crops, high-yielding varieties, nutritional enhancement, stress tolerance in plants, medical research, and the study of genetic diseases. At the same time, he emphasised the critical need to utilise this technology responsibly and in adherence to ethical values.
Attending as the Chief Guest, TGCGTA State President Kadaru Surender Reddy stated that organising such national-level conferences in higher educational institutions fosters a scientific temper, research interest, and an understanding of innovations among students. He advised students not to limit their knowledge of modern science and technology merely to their curriculum, but to apply it toward research and societal development.
Head of the Department of Botany and College Controller of Examinations, Prof. Thirukovela Srinivas, acted as the Convener of the conference. Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the necessity of exploring scientific solutions through modern biotechnology for contemporary challenges such as biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, food security, healthcare, and environmental protection. He urged students to stay updated with the latest research and prepare themselves for future scientific endeavours.
Faculty, researchers, and students participated enthusiastically, gaining valuable insights into gene editing, molecular biology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, and modern biological research. A special highlight of the conference was the opportunity for students to interact directly with the subject experts.
