JAGTIAL, AUGUST 12, 2026: National Librarian’s Day was celebrated grandly at SKNR Government Arts & Science College, Jagtial, commemorating the birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India and a pioneer in the field of Library and Information Science, on Wednesday.
On this occasion, College Principal P. Indira Devi paid floral tributes to the portrait of Ranganathan. Speaking on the occasion, she highlighted the invaluable and lasting contributions of Dr. Ranganathan to the development of Library and Information Science in India. She stated that his vision transformed libraries from mere repositories of books into dynamic centres of knowledge, learning, research and intellectual development.
The Principal further stated that Ranganathan’s “Five Laws of Library Science” have served as fundamental guiding principles for libraries across the world. She emphasized the importance of developing a strong reading culture among students and encouraged them to make effective use of library resources, including books, journals, digital resources and e-learning materials. She observed that libraries play a vital role in enhancing students’ academic performance, critical thinking and overall intellectual development.
Vice-Principal Prof. Adepu Srinivas stated that regular reading not only broadens students’ knowledge but also develops their analytical ability, creativity, imagination and independent thinking. He encouraged students to cultivate the habit of reading beyond their prescribed textbooks.
NCC Officer Lt. P. Raju, Associate Professor of Zoology, emphasized that students should not restrict their learning to classroom textbooks alone. He encouraged them to read books on diverse subjects and acquire broad-based knowledge. He remarked that libraries provide a strong foundation for lifelong learning and personal development.
Librarian Kokkula Surender highlighted the pioneering role of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan in the Indian library movement and explained the continuing relevance of his principles in modern library management. He encouraged students to make full use of the books, journals, e-resources and other information services available in the college library.
The programme was attended by Academic Coordinator GVR Sai Madhukar, GDC Korutla FAC Principal Sandeep, GDC Metpally FAC Principal K. Venkataiah, teaching and non-teaching staff, and a large number of students. All the participants paid rich tributes to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and recalled his remarkable contribution to the field of Library and Information Science.
The programme also created awareness among students about the importance of library usage, reading habits and effective utilization of information resources. The celebrations concluded successfully with a renewed commitment to promoting a vibrant reading culture and strengthening the role of the library in building a knowledgeable and informed society.
