KARIMNAGAR, AUGUST 12, 2026: The 134th birth anniversary of Prof. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Government Degree College for Women (Autonomous), Karimnagar, under the auspices of the Library Department, on Wednesday.
The Principal and Chief Guest, Prof. D. Varalakshmi, addressed the gathering and highlighted the significant contributions of Prof. S. R. Ranganathan to the development and management of library science. She stated that he introduced systematic and dynamic library services by integrating classification, cataloguing, indexing, and various scientific and technological aspects. She particularly encouraged the students to make effective use of the library services.
College Librarian M. D. Hafeez Miyan explained the contributions and services of Prof. Ranganathan. He elaborated on the Five Laws of Library Science and the Colon Classification System. He stated that Prof. Ranganathan introduced systematic methods of library classification and indexing as early as 1933 and authored several important works in the field of library science. He urged the students to make effective use of his valuable writings and ideas.
On the occasion, Principal Prof. D. Varalakshmi distributed prizes to the students. The programme was attended by Ms. Swaroopa, Lecturer in Economics, Mr. Srinivas, Lecturer in Computer Science, along with teaching and non-teaching staff and students.
